There's a long story behind Benny Binion. He was born 11-20-1904 in Texas, he moved to El Paso when he was 17. He began moonshining and was convicted for it. He opened up a numbers game which was also illegal. He was convicted of murder in 1931 after killing Frank Bolding. He got a two year suspended sentence and killed a fellow numbers operator who drew a gun on him. He was married and had 5 children. His children had many problems, drugs, suicide. In 1946 Benny moved to Las Vegas and became a partner in a casino. He opened his own casino in 1951, the Eldourado Club. He was the first to replace saw-dust covered casino floors with carpet.
Binion had his own saying, "good food, good whiskey, good gamble"
He served time in Leavenworth Penitentiary from 1953-1957 for tax evasion. Benny was never allowed to hold a gambling license after that. Benny's daughter took over the casino but in 2004 the IRS raided it and closed it for non-payment of taxes. It now operates as Binions Gambling Hall. Benny Binion created the World Series of Poker. He died of heart failure at the age of 85 on Christmas day in 1989.
