This spa is located at an unusual geothermally heated lake in the midst of the Reykjanes lava fields of Iceland. The basin of the lake was formed in an enlarged depression in a geologically recent lava field, the base of which was laid down at the end of the Holocene but which was then buried by subsequent lavas occuring repeatedly up through historic times. The flows of uppermost strata right at the location of the Blue Lagoon were laid down as recently as the 13th century AD, but some of the flows in the surrounding lava fields are are as recent as the middle of the 20th century. The waters filling this basin are a constant temperature of 110 degrees F, and originate from a blend of cold north Atlantic seawater mixed with boiling geothermal steam from deep in the earth. The minerals brought to the surface with the steam, along with the salts of the sea water, create an environment where a special blue-green algae can thrive. The combination of minerals, salts, algae, and steamy hot water has beneficial properties for the skin and joints, so a soak in the Blue Lagoon has medical benefits as well as soothing the spirit. This is an arctic location where you can swim outdoors even in the frigid cold of winter, watching the dance of the Northern Lights play across a dark horizon. In addition to the Lagoon itself, there is a spa building and medical clinic located here, along with a restaurant and cafeteria. This Lagoon and spa is an "oasis for weary travellers," as it is located on the Ryekjanes Peninsula only 15 minutes from Iceland's Keflavik International Airport, and only 45 minutes from the capitol city of Reyjavik.
