For over 65 years the Jungle Queen Riverboat has traveled up the New River in Fort Lauderdale. The boat passes by homes owned (or once owned) by famous people such as the “Six Million Dollar Man”. At one point the path curves around a peninsula shaped like Florida. The house that sits on this plot of land was once a hang out for gangster Al Capone.

Over 14 million people have paid to look at these magnificent and historical homes as they sing folk songs and listen to jokes. At Christmas time the homes adorned with holiday decorations are beautiful. Some of the people who own these beautiful homes step out and wave or toast the passengers on the boat.

There are two cruises offered. Both leave from the Bahia Mar Dock. The dock is not difficult to find. Exit off of I-95 at Sunrise Boulevard. Go east until you can go no farther (you’ll see the Atlantic Ocean). Go south on AIA and the dock will be down on the left. Call ahead (1-954-462-5596) for reservations because the boat is often booked to capacity. There is a public parking lot across from the docks.

The dinner cruise leaves promptly at 7:00 pm. The destination is the Jungle Queen Island where “all you can eat” ribs, shrimp, and chicken are served. The meal is followed with an old timey audience participation vaudeville show. There are souvenirs to purchase. The boat holds 517 people. The cost is $34.95 for adults and $19.00 for children. The dinner cruise lasts a little over four hours.

The second type of cruise offered leaves at 9:30 am or 1:30 pm. It also travels to the island. The trip up New river is great. You will pass the old boat warehouse where Jim Carrey and Dan Marino filmed part of Ace Ventura, Pet Detective. You also pass several boat factories where you can see million dollar yachts in various stages of construction. There is alligator wrestling by members of the Seminole tribe to see on the island. You can also look at thee exotic birdlife. This cruise cost $15.50 for adults and $11.00 for children; it lasts approximately three hours.
