The first span of the Blue Water Bridge across the St. Clair river was opened October 8, 1938, but it is a Cantilevered bridge with a center truss. To accomodate the increasing needs of international traffic, the seconds span, which is of the Arched bridge design was opened to traffic on July 22, 1997.

Since the first Blue Water Bridge was opened, the traffic volumes have grown from approximately 155,000 total vehicles in 1939 to approximately 5,513,809 total vehicles in 2005.
