On July 19th and 20th 1848, 5 prominent local women gathered at this location in Seneca Falls, New York, along with over 300 other citizens.
they discussed the need to begin fighting for equal rights for women.
The result of this convention was a document known as the "Declaration of Sentiments". This declaration was the beginning of a long hard struggle that took the women all over the United States and even overseas. Eventually, however, the battle was won and equal rights for women was a success. The National Park Service maintains the remains of this historic site to shed light on the beginnings of the womens' rights movement and to inspire current and future generations to explore ideas of freedom of speech, equality and social reform.
