This stain glass sundial set into a south facing window of Buckland Abbey.
The stain glass sundial commemorates the four hundredth anniversary of the death of Sir Francis Drake in 1596. It represents a sixteenth century chart of the Atlantic Ocean.
On which hour lines radiate from a decorative compass rose. Drake’s ship the Golden Hind, is depicted sailing along the evening eight o’clock hour line of course from Plymouth to Porto Bello where an encircled cross indicates the position of Drake’s burial. The heraldic shield displays Drake’s coat of arms.
The sundial was designed by Christopher Daniel and made in the studios of Messrs Goddard and Gibbs by Lord Cardross and Norman Attwell. The undertaking was funded through the bequest of Dr Ellinger and Plymouth Centre of the National Trust.

Buckland Abbey was originally a small but influential Cistercian monastery. Founded 700 years ago was already an historic building when Sir Francis Drake moved in during the 16th century.
Now in the hands of the National Trust, there is an entrance
fee. see link for details.
