What a fabulous building in such a small state capitol. Alaska has one of the few capitol buildings that lacks a dome. For being the largest state in land mass, the capitol of Alaska is so small.

This building was originally the Federal and Territorial Building, but later became the property of the great State of Alaska.

Its brick-faced reinforced concrete structure and the lower façade are faced with Indiana limestone. The four columns of the portico and the interior trim are made of light and dark Tokeen marble from quarries at Tokeen, Prince of Wales Island, in Southeast Alaska. It's so wonderful that important parts of this building are from Alaska. I believe it should be a law that all state capitols should be built of native materials!

On another side note, since 2004, plans for a new Capitol building have been underway by Thom Mayne of Morphosis (arghhhh!! of Santa Monica, CA) and Mike Mense of Mense Architects (Anchorage, AK). The new designs are beyond scary as described in this article by a local Alaskan (visit link)

I sure hope the people of Alaska can find a way to fight this horrendous new building!!
