The train station is now no longer used for its original purpose. In its heyday there were regular passenger and freight services. Since 1998 the station has only been used as a destination point for tourist purposes, and not as a working station.

The Barossa Wine Train resumed operation after three years "off the tracks". The three remaining operative Bluebird railcars had been languishing in the open at Islington, covered in graffiti, and on the verge of being sold to Sri Lanka. The 1952 Bluebird carriages have been renovated and scheduled tourist services began at the end of 2006. The train journey is 90 mins from Adelaide to Tanunda.

Established in 1998, the four-day-a-week, year-round service allowed passengers to enjoy on-board wine tastings while travelling from the Adelaide Railway Station to the Tanunda Railway Station, just metres from Chateau Tanunda, before being shuttled by bus to wineries and tourist attractions. Public liability issues had forced the train to close in 2003. Prior to that time, the train took about 15,000 people to the Barossa Valley each year.
