It is believed man came to Dartmoor about 10,000 years ago, at the time Dartmoor was covered heavily with stunted woodland, which was cleared by the early farmers except for a few remnants such as Wistman’s Wood in central Dartmoor.
Wiseman’s Wood is situated on high moorland overlooking the West Dart River.
The Plaque says:
Welcome to Wistmans’ Wood
This Reserve has long been known for its stunted oak trees, festooned with mosses and lichens, growing amongst covered boulders.
Over the centuries the wood has changed considerably. In 1620, Tristram Risdon wrote that the trees were “no taller than a man may touch to top with his head”
In 1912, a geological survey party tried to walk the wood but gave up after three hours due to dense vegetation. The average height of the trees today is 6 metres, three times the height they were in 1912.
