In 1858, the first train steamed into Chur. Or rather, to the outskirts of Chur, for in those days, the region between the Old Town and the Rhine was largely undeveloped. However, long before the railway era, Chur was a key transport hub to the north of the passes over the Alps. The architecture of the glass roof, which has spanned the railway lines and PostAuto forecourt like an archway since 1994, bears witness to this significant role. The main building on the Bahnhofplatz dates from 1878 and adjoins a Restaurant, which was added in the early 20th century.
Serving a region with a population of about 60,000, Chur station links Canton Graubünden to the rest of Switzerland. Some 8,500 travellers a day board a bus or train here, and the station is also a popular starting point for countless tourists travelling to Graubünden's leading holiday regions, whether on the Arosa Bahn, the Rhätische Bahn or by postbus. With some 150,000 overnight stays a year, Chur's hotels do just as well as those in St. Gallen, which is twice as big.
Chur's new station was unveiled to the public in all its glory in the summer of 2007. The restored and modernized Belle Époque station building was enlarged by the addition of a new “Mall & Office” block and a shopping arcade. The Bahnhofplatz in front of the station was also redesigned, with the aim being to keep public and private transport completely separate. This greatly enhances the station users' safety and convenience – thanks mainly to the addition of the underground shopping arcade.
