The sign says:
"The arboretum was started my Arjay Miller in 1960 and opened to the public in 1966, when he was president of Ford Motor Company. The purpose was and is to provide in one plac, a living panorama of the great variety of trees and shrubs that are native to Michigan. The arboretum has grown until it is now one of the largest in the United States devoted exclusivly to trees and shrubs from a specific state. Michigan, with some 58,000 square miles of land, has more varieties of trees and shrubs than the entire continent of Europe, which covers 3,700,000 square miles.

We hope that you will find our Arjay Miller Michigan Arboretum to be a source of beauty, pleasure and knowledge. It is especially hoped that it will provide you with a greater appreciation of our Michigan Heritage and natural beauty."
