Whiteface Mountain is New York State's fifth-highest peak. Construction of the highway began in 1931. Then-Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt personally endorsed the highway because it would allow people with physical disabilities access to the beauty of the summit. The road was completed in 1935 and Roosevelt, who at the time, was president of the United States, dedicated the Highway as a memorial to New York State veterans of the Great War (WWI). The five mile highway was rededicated in 1985 by then-Governor Mario Cuomo as the Whiteface Memorial Highway to veterans of all wars. There are two routes to the summit from the parking area at the top, the Stairway Ridge Trail or the elevator. The elevator is at the end of a 426 ft. long tunnel, it climbs 276 feet up to the summit house. There are 2 trails to hike Whiteface. One via Connery Pond and Whiteface Landing or via Wilmington Trail. The Wilmington Trail route is the easier of the two.
