Prince William of Orange the future King William 111, first landed on British soil at Brixham on 5th November 1688. The stone on which it is claimed that Prince William first set foot, at the start of the bloodless revolution which made him king, is preserved on the quayside. Nearby stands the statue which was erected two hundred years later to commemorate this event. It bears his famous declaration:

" The liberties of England and the Protestant religion I will maintain"
