The U.S.S. Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship of the United States Navy commissioned in 1916. The Arizona sank on December 7, 1941 during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The sunken battleship became the resting place for over 1,100 of the 1,177 sailors killed when the Arizona was attacked. In 1962, the Arizona Memorial was was built across the ships sunken remains to honor those who lost their lives on that "day of infamy".
The 184-foot memorial floats directly over the mid-section of the sunken battleship. The memorial consists of three sections: the entry room, the asssembly room and the shrine room. The assembly room contains seven windows to commemorate the date of the attack and an opening in the floor directly over the ship's sunken deck. The shrine room contains a marble wall bearing the names of all 1,177 servicemen killed on board.
Today, the U.S.S. Arizona National Memorial attracts over 1.5 million visitors each year, including every President of the United States since Franklin Roosevelt and every Emperor of Japan since Hirohito.
