The Cathedral of the Annunciation, located at the southwest corner of Cathedral square in the Kremlin, was commissioned by Ivan III in 1484. Unlike the other Kremlin Cathedrals of Italian design it is a wholly Russian structure. The original building had three domes but additional ones were added during reconstruction after a 16th century fire. This was the private chapel of the royal families where they attended services and celebrated christenings and marriages. Ivan the Terrible's fourth marriage disqualified him under church law from entering the church so he added a porch on the south side where he could watch services through a grille.
The interior is decorated with the usual lavish assemblage of frescoes and icons. In the photos the green mesh is covering ongoing restoration work on the exterior
