The South Blockhouse was the first building constructed in the Sunrise area of Mt. Rainier National Park. It was built in 1930.

Park architect Thomas C. Vint designed the South Blockhouse along with the Visitor Center and North Blockhouse, which were built at a later time. The three buildings together form the Stockade, a National Historic Landmark.
The building was constructed using timber frame and stone with log slab veneer in 1930. It was the first building to be built in the Sunrise area, originally called Yakima Park. Through the 1930's it acted as the administration area, interpretive museum, and ranger residence. When the other buildings were completed in the 1940's the South Blockade was converted for use as housing and is still used as such today.
The building measures 32x32 feet at the base and 36x36 feet at the top.
