The engineer Thomas Telford built this bridge in 1826 as part of his commission to improve the condition on the Chester to Bangor road. The bridge retains most of the original features; including the original chains and one of the original Telford style sunburst gates. The bridge was built in a mock castle-style to complement the Castle. In 1958 the building of the new road bridge led to its closure and demolition was a real possibility. A campaign led to the council setting up a fund allowing the bridge to be acquired and preserved by the National Trust in 1965.
