Also known as Elitch Gardens Carousel and Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #6. The carousel manufactured in 1905 was the sixth of 74 carousels manufactured by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company between 1904 and 1933. The carousel was manufactured for Elitch Gardens, a Denver amusement park and operated there until 1928 when it was sold to Kit Carson County for $1,200. The expenditure was view as an extravagant expenditure and ultimately cost the county commissioners their jobs. The carousel is a three rows stationary (the animals do not move up and down) machine housed in a 12-sided frame building. It has 46 hand-carved animals, four chariots, 45 oil paintings, and a one-of-a-kind 1912 Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ and is the oldest carousel, extant in virtually unaltered condition with original paint on murals and animals. The animals include horses, burros, camels, a dog, deer, giraffes, goats, a hippocampus, a lion, a tiger, and zebras. The carousel was restored in 1976 and again in 1992. A ride on the carousel cost 25¢ and is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day 1 pm to 8 pm daily. Recently added is a museum with displays about the history and restoration of the carousel at a cost of $1.
