Valley of Fire State Park is named after the impressive red sandstone formations it contains. The park also contains several areas where petrified wood & petroglyphs can be found. The park is easily accessible from nearby Las Vegas, 55 miles to the SW. The scenery has shown up in a number of movies & commercials. The views close to sunset are amazing - as the rocks almost appear to be "on fire" - truly an amazing sight!

Background:
Valley of Fire was established in 1935 & is Nevada's oldest state park. The sandstone formations date back 150 million years - conglomerate, shale & limestone can be found here as well. This area was visited from about 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. by native peoples of the surrounding areas.
