Matthew B. Juan, a Pima Indian, was the first of 321 Arizona men killed in WWI. Like many of Arizona's native Americans he showed his patriotism by enlisting.

Ira H. Hayes, survivor with Rene A. Gagnon and John H. Bradley of the famous Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima. Born 12 January 1923, Sacaton, Arizona. Died 24 January 1955, Bapchule, Arizona, USA (hypothermia after passing out drunk in a ditch). Buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA Plot: Section 34, Grave 479A.

Matthew B. Juan, Ira H. Hayes Veterans Memorial Park is located on the Pima Indian Reservation in Sacaton on the corner of Sacaton Rd. and W. Casa Blanca Rd. Spanish missionaries first came to the area in 1696. They found established Pima Indian Settlements. Sacaton continues to be a center for the Pima Reservation. The name was chosen because of the very tall grass that was found in the area. Sacaton is said to have been the staging site for the Union attack on Confederates during the Civil War. There are many old missionary churches that are still standing.
