Le beffroi est sans doute l'élément le plus célèbre de la ville. Symbole de Concarneau, il est lié à l'histoire de la mesure du temps. Pour connaître l'heure, les Concarnois profitaient des sirènes des usines et des cloches des églises, mais l'horloge devient progressivement un instrument indispensable. Placé sur les fortifications à l'entrée de la Ville Close , le beffroi devient rapidement le symbole de la ville. Par la délibération du Conseil municipal du 8 septembre 1906, le conseil décide qu'une plaque commémorative en métal ou en marbre soit posée contre le campanile de l'horloge, rappelant la date de la délibération demandant son édification. On ne trouve aucune trace de cette plaque aujourd'hui mais elle a probablement existé. Dans les années 1960, un architecte avait envisagé « de restaurer le beffroi tel qu'il était auparavant ». II proposait de supprimer ce typique clocheton qui domine l'entrée de la citadelle, tollé général et l'idée fut abandonnée.

No trace of this plate today is found but it probably existed. In the years 1960, an architect had planned “to restore the belfry such as it was before”. II proposed to remove this typical pinnacle which dominates the entry of the citadel, outcry general and the idea was abandoned.
