The first dam at this location was a crib dam built by Joseph Atkinson between 1840 and 1854. In 1911 the Department of Forestry made it taller. In 1932 the Department of Forests and Waters built a new concrete core dam. And in the 1930's the Civilian Conservation Corps also made improvements.
Initially built for the logging industry the dam now provides a 422 acre lake for just part of the many recreational activities at Promised Land State Park.
