This pyramid marks the location of the original log cabin that was the birthplace of James Buchanan on April 23, 1791. In 1953 the cabin was removed and relocated to the grounds of the Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA where it still stands.
The pyramid is 38 ft. square, 31 ft. tall, constructed of native stone and weighs 300 tons including 50 tons of hammered American gray granite for the tablet, bench, and capstone.
James Buchanan was a lawyer, member of legislature and Congress, Minister to Russia, member of the United States Senate, Secretary of State, Minister to Great Britian, and the 15th President of the United States.
He died on June 1, 1868.
