Thousands of emigrants traveled the Oregon Trail. They endured Indian raids, scarcity of clean water, rattlesnake bites, prairie fires, and many other hardships along the trail.Park your vehicle near the Vieux Cemetery, cross the bridge over the Red Vermillion River and walk a short distance to the east. Here some 45 to 50 emigrants succumbed to cholera. From the hillside in the immediate vicinity large slabs of lime rock were carried by the survivors. A stone was erected at the head of each grave, and the name and date of burial carved on each stone. Only three remain of those created; one carving is distinguishable: T.S. Prather, May 27, 1849.
