The Eternal Word Television Network was founded in a small garage at Our Lady of the Angels Monastery in Irondale, AL by Mother Angelica, a cloistered Franciscan nun. Today, EWTN's television broadcast includes a Daily Mass from its Birmingham, Alabama Monastery/Studios, talk shows such as EWTN Live and Sunday Night Live, Daily Rosary, Benediction, doctrinal instruction programs, entertainment/variety shows, children's programming, live coverage of world Catholic events such as Bishops' conferences and Papal travels, music shows, youth programming, and so forth.
In over 25 years of operation, EWTN has grown into the largest religious media network in the world and includes multi-lingual outlets on cable and satellite TRV, AM/FM radio, shortwave, and internet video streaming and podcasting.
Visitors are invited to attend daily mass at the network chapel, take tours of the television facility, or be a part of live audiences for the network programs which originate weeknights from the TV studio.
Due to growth of the TV production operations, the foundress, Mother Angelica, has moved her cloister north of Birmingham to Hanceville, AL, but a men's order, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word, are located on the network grounds. The brothers of the Annunciation Friary help with tours, masses, TV operations, and prayer support.
In addition to regular business hours, Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, visitors may also attend a regular daily televised mass at the chapel seven days a week beginning at 7am. EWTN also tapes live television programs open to the public Mon-Thur. Please call ahead to make sure that seating is available.
