The memorial was erected in 1888 and was officially unveiled by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who was Commander-in-Chief of Devonport, on the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The National Armada Memorial was erected to mark the 300th anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada the bronze sculpture depicts Britannia looking out to sea. On each side of the pedestal are the faces and coats-of-arms of historic figures such as Sir Francis Drake, Lord Howard of Effingham, the Admiral-in-Chief Lord Seymour and Sir John Hawkins as well as the crests of towns and cities, who sent ships, men and money to halt the Spanish Invasion in 1588.
It was also the focus of the city’s first Remembrance Day in 1919 when over 2,000 tributes in honour of those who died in World War One were placed at its base.
