This roundhouse is in the process of being restored into office space. The goal is to create offices for the city, and then to create an amphitheater surrounding the table.
The railroad complex includes this 28 stall roundhouse and table, a machine shop (restored and used as an event space), a powerhouse, and assorted other buildings. A 20 stall roundhouse was first built in the city in 1871 a few blocks from this one. When Union Pacific outgrew this roundhouse in 1912 the current structure was built. By 1925 the train engines where large and efficient enough to bypass Evanston without stopping for service and the complex was reduced to just a few workers. During WWII the complex was turned into a reclamation plant and workers swelled to 300 plus.
In the 1990's restoration efforts began and slowly but surely the complex is being restored. The machine shop's restoration is complete and it's been a great event space for the community.
