John Campbell Greenway was born in Huntsville, Alabama on July 6, 1872. He graduated from Yale University in 1895 and briefly worked for Carnegie Steel as a furnace helper but left to join Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. He earned a Silver Star for his courageous service at the Battle of San Juan Hill.

From 1899 he held executive positions in a number of mines, steel and railroad companies through out Arizona. He developed mining procedures still used long after his death. He served as a regent of the University of Arizona for one year but left to fight in WWI. He was cited for bravery and France awarded him the Croix de Guerre, the Legion of Honor, and the Croix de l'Etoile. He also received a Distinguished Service Cross. In 1919 Greenway became a colonel of infantry and three years later was promoted to brigadier general.

In 1923 he married Isabella Selmes Ferguson, the widow of one of Greenway's best friends, Robert Ferguson. After Greenway's death in 1926, Isabella went on to serve as Arizona's representative in Washington.
