In 1996, President Clinton signed the bill creating the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery from the former Joliet Army Arsenal Plant.

This is the first National Cemetery for the Chicagoland area.

Interments did not begin until late 1999 and is expected to provide over 400,000 interments of various types for the next 20 or so years.

As can be expected, visitation is high during Memorial Day and Veteran's Day holidays.
Date cemetery was established: October 3, 1999

Visiting hours:
For the grounds, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm - closed holidays, except Memorial Day. The Visitors Center, however, may not always be open since it is staffed by volunteers, but the local VFW's do not let that happen.
