Major Steven Long pronounced the northeast region of Colorado to "never be fit for human habitation other than the nomad races." By the 1820's though, trappers and traders were passing through the region in search of beaver. Then, coinciding with the gold strikes, the Pony Express established a mail stop in Julesburg. Next, the transcontinental railroad Union Pacific rails reached Julesburg from the East in 1867. The emergence of the railroad caused a population explosion and earned this wild town the nickname, "Wickedest City in the West." Just 2 miles from the Nebraska border, along Interstate 76, Julesburg is the last remaining town of four of the same name in this area. Now Julesburg is the business center for this large agricultural region.
The diversity of birdlife is northeastern Colorado's claim to fame. Many enjoy bird watching in this area while others enjoy hunting the birds. The fall and spring migrations of the birds almost beg for you to take side roads to see their beauty. Julesburg is also along the South Platte River that branches off the Missouri river a the border of Iowa and Nebraska and runs to Fairplay in central Colorado. The South Platte River is home to world class fishing and the best tailwater fishing in the state.

The new Welcome Center on I-76 at Julesburg hosts hundreds of thousands of Colorado visitors each year. The center features a vast expanse of parking, numerous picnic areas, and displays of historical interest related to the South Platte River Trail.

It is here the South Platte River Trail begins, charting a 19-mile loop past the sites of two previous Julesburgs, Fort Sedgwick and various other points of interest.
