The Gardens are situated over a low plateau and coastal plain, with Fannie Bay as a border. Before the development of Darwin, this area supported an Open Eucalypt Woodland on the plateau and parts of the coastal plain. Among the gullies and low 'seepage' areas of the coastal plain there were pockets of Monsoon Vine -Thicket. The coastal portion had a fragile Strand community and Mangrove influence.

Importance of the gardens
- The Gardens are one of the very few Botanic Gardens in a tropical region.
- The Gardens provide a conservation role for tropical plant species. - Other tropical Botanic Gardens are predominantly in the 'Third World'.
- The Gardens are uniquely located in the Wet / Dry Tropics and contain a major collection of Northern Australian monsoon flora.
- Ethno - botanical collections in the areas of Aboriginal plant use and South East Asian displays are highly regarded.
- The Gardens are seen as the 'State' Botanic Gardens.
- The Gardens are considered to be a springboard to the landscapes of the 'Top End'.
