Started building in 975 and finished in 1036. .
The cathedral ist predominant romanesque, but scores of modifications and additions over the next centurys also show gothic and baroque elements.
It is also one of the german emperors cathedrals (An emperor was part of planing and building).
It is the church of the bishop of Mainz belonging to the diocese Mainz. It stands under the patronage of "Saint Martin of Tours" (317-397), The eastern quire is dedicated to "Saint Stephen" (1-36).
