This bridge used to carry the Pontypool,Caerleon and Newport Railway railway line across the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.The railway which used to run through Griffithstown and Panteg until it was axed by Dr Beeching.

bridge is still in good condition, but now a cycle track and footpath.Regular visitor when taking the dog for a walk.Lovely spot.
It is sad to see that both forms of transport are now sadly gone. Originally The canal was built to carry coal and iron to Newport . The coal trade on the canal switched to the quicker form of transport, rail.
With the decline in the coal industry, Beeching's axe and people's love of the car led to the closure of the railway first it's passengers and then the line closed, with the lifting of the rails in the 1980's.
