General Bates received a Medal of Honor as a Colonel when he led his troops, 30th U.S. Colored Troops, in an assault at Cemetery Hill in Petersburg, Virginia, 30 July 1864. After the war he returned to his home state of New York for a period of time and then moved to Nebraska as a homesteader. He met the requirements for his homestead and then moved into Aurora, Nebraska. He became very active as civic leader of the community including serving on the city council. This white bronze grave marker is one of three markers for General Bates' grave.
