C'était la première fois qu'une statue équestre était réalisée. C'était aussi la première fois qu'une statue s'offrait au public, indépendante de toute construction. Cette statue longtemps nommée "le cheval de bronze", devint donc une attraction.
Comme toutes les statues royales, elle fut fondue pendant la Révolution et remplacée à l'identique plus tard.
