La "grotte du Luxembourg", plus tard appelée fontaine Médicis, a été commandée par Marie de Médicis aux alentours de 1630.

Marie de Médicis avait envisagé pour la décoration du jardin du palais qu’elle venait de faire construire à Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Germain-des-Prés, nombre de grottes, fontaines, bassins et terrasses avec jeux d’eau. Aujourd’hui, seule la fontaine Médicis est le témoignage des réalisations souhaitées par la reine.
La niche centrale est occupée par un groupe en marbre représentant Acis et Galathée couchés sous un rocher au sommet duquel apparaît la figure colossale en bronze de Polyphème s’apprêtant à lancer sur son rival la pierre qui doit lui donner la mort.
