In 1988, the law firm of Baine, Buzzard, and McRae purchased 300 acres at the corner of US-421 and NC-27 from Burlington Industries. Twelve years later, Harnett County officials began looking for a new site so they could replace the old, cramped downtown courthouse. They also wanted to consolidate all county offices in one location.

By 2003, the county had purchased the 300 acres and built a large, modern courthouse which houses District 11A, plus small claims and traffic courts. A large area is devoted to tax records and deeds--both of which are stored electronically.

The law firm kept 2 acres and used it to relocate their downtown offices to the new site. Edgar Baine, the Senior Partner, told me, "I should have kept 20 acres, instead of just two!"

The courthouse is on the north side of the Cape Fear River, 2 miles north of downtown Lillington.
