The Mayhew Cabin is the only site in Nebraska that is part of the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

This pioneer Cabin was the home of Allen Mayhew and his wife Barabara Kagi Mayhew, who was the sister of John Kagi, one of John Brown's closest associates. It's believed that the original cabin had a dugout cave under it, which was reached by a tunnel from a hidden entrance in a nearby ravine. The cabin served as a refuge for slaves who crossed from Missouri, a slave state, into Nebraska, a free territory.
The area was known for over a century as "John Brown's Cave". John Kagi lived here at times but there is no conclusive evidence that John Brown ever stayed at the cabin although he did pass through Nebraska City at least five times.
The area was renovated in 2005 and is now open for tours as The Mayhew Cabin and Historic Village.
A Nebraska Historical Marker is located at the site.
