Stan the Muffler Man is a long-standing landmark of the Birmingham skyline. He has stood watch over at least two to three businesses over the years. Although most locals remember him from his perch atop an auto repair shop overlooking I-65 near the interchange, holding a pair of tires, today he stands near the Tallapoosa Exit of 59/20 in a different area of the city. The business he stands in front of looking so empty-handed is GCR Tire Center (3340 Vanderbilt Rd). Over the years, Stan has had a foot “amputated” when a car ran over it and has been cut in half by high winds yet he still stands tall.
