This was the lock-up for the village of Gnosall, once the largest village in England. It has thick sandstone walls and no windows. It would sometimes be used for prisoners on their way to town gaols.
Built in 1832, it was originally situated at the bottom of the High Street across from the local almshouses, where the present day A518 bends left.
It is now situated by the side of the A518, the main road between Stafford and Newport, across from the cemetery. It was moved brick-by-brick to its present position by the Women's Institute in 1971.
