The
park feature a huge granite boulders standing end to end like a parade of
elephants. Standing atop a granite outcrop, one of the largest elephant rocks,
Dumbo, tops the scales at a whopping 680 tons. About 150 billion years ago hot
magma cooled forming coarsely crystalline red granite, over the years the
granite weathered into huge boulders.
Also in the park is a former granite quarry which now has been filled with
water forming a lake. The granite quarries in the area were the largest in the
state with the granite used for building and paving stones. The red granite
currently quarried in the area is used mostly for monument stones.
