The National Museum of Australia opened on 11 March 2001 to coincide with Australia's Centenary of Federation.

The architecture and design of the National Museum of Australia is modern & very unusual - and also somewhat controversial. The most noticeable feature is the gigantic sculptural loop at the entrance - the most visible part of the Uluru line. Colour is used extensively, outside and inside.

The museum houses 6600 square metres of exhibition space, in several spaces pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle, forming a semicircle around the Garden of Australian Dreams.
Theme:
The National Museum of Australia is a museum of social history, and focuses on three broad research areas: 1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture 2. Australia's history and society since European settlement in 1788 3. the interaction of people with the environment
