The National Museum of Australia opened on 11 March 2001 to coincide with Australia's Centenary of Federation.
The architecture and design of the National Museum of Australia is modern & very unusual - and also somewhat controversial. The most noticeable feature is the gigantic sculptural loop at the entrance - the most visible part of the Uluru line. Colour is used extensively, outside and inside.
The museum houses 6600 square metres of exhibition space, in several spaces pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle, forming a semicircle around the Garden of Australian Dreams.

1. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture
2. Australia's history and society since European settlement in 1788
3. the interaction of people with the environment
