Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park

N 34 30.283  W 119 47.263

Painted Cave State Historic Park is located in the mountains north of Santa Barbara, California.  While the origins of the paintings are unknown, they are probably made for religious reasons.  Link to Directions to Cave.

The entrance to the cave is blocked by the gate as shown in photo on the left (I'm holding the GPS.)  The middle photo is of the sign located below the cave opening.  The photo on the right is another view of the cave.

The Chumash Indians once inhabited the coastal area between Malibu and Paso Robles, California.  They were hunters, gatherers, and fishermen.  They lived in large, domed-shaped homes made of willow branches.  They made canoes from planks and sealed the cracks with tar.
