This armory was constructed with the help of the Work Progress Administration (WPA). Construction was begun in 1938 and completed in September 1940. During construction the project employed 50 men throughout. The cost of the building was $123,000 with the WPA paying $76,000. When constructed the building included include the drill floor, several garages, two supply rooms, a band practice hall, a band storage room, a naval reserve room, three dining rooms, a kitchen, basement and several offices. Even before the building was completed the community used the building for a festival. When the building was completed it was turned to the National Guard with the agreement it would be maintained by the Guard but frequently rented by the community. The armory continues to serve the Guard and the community of Hiawatha.
