There are two outdoor warning sirens in Hemingford, one at the fire hall, near the center of town, and one on the South edge of town. Hemingford is located in the North Central panhandle of Nebraska and is prone to tornado activity. There are three different things the sirens can tell the citizens, they are tornado, fire and attack. Fortunately we have not had to use the attack siren & I doubt many of Hemingford's 1,000 residents realize what it sounds like, we tend to take things for granted. The tornado & fire sirens are tested regularly in addition to the normal use. The tornado siren tends to bring people out of their houses to look at the sky though. The fire siren is used to bring more firefighter's/EMT's to a call for those of us who leave the pagers at home. It also tends to be a good coffee shop conversation too! The last tornado siren was this summer, I can't remember the date though, when a tornado was spotted about 5 miles Southwest of town. The last time the fire siren was sounded was September 3, 2005, we were called to a grass fire with farm equipment on fire also. There were only four of us in town on the Labor Day weekend.
