The Ohio Statehouse is located on a large grassy block in the middle of downtown Columbus. Building of the Statehouse was complete November 15, 1860, the cornerstone of the building was laid on July 4, 1839. It was built in a Greek Revival style, and it has recently received some much needed updating.

According to the official website for the Statehouse, the original building was intended to had 57 rooms, over the years these rooms were subdivided until there were a total of 317 rooms in the building. Needless to say, there wasn't much elbow room in there. The rooms were rebuilt, the Atrium and Rotunda received attention to bring them back to their original states. The grounds around the building were also updated with fresh sidewalks, handicap accessible entrances, and new trees and plants. The building itself was also updated to meet current fire and safety codes. Some construction on the ground is still ongoing, but the building itself is complete.

The Statehouse is open for free guided tours Mondays through Fridays on the hour from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 3 p.m. Anytime the Statehouse is open visitors are welcome to come inside to poke around and take their own self guided tour.

Of interesting history, Abraham Lincoln made his first speech in Ohio at the Statehouse on September 16, 1859. This speech helped to better the Republican Party's standing with the public for the 1860 election. On April 29, 1865. From 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Lincoln's body lay in state in the Rotunda. Inside the Statehouse is a bust of Lincoln which is rumored to be one of the only busts that Lincoln sat for during his lifetime.
