"Completed in May, 2006, this new bridge over Highway 54 in Research Triangle Park replaces the old single-track bridge that had substandard clearance and, because of its narrowness, caused a significant bottleneck on Highway 54. The new bridge is double-tracked to increase train capacity and speed. The improvements will allow traffic to flow smoothly and safely on the road below while allowing both freight and passenger trains to move along the corridor."
---NC Railroad Projects Website
The bridge runs north-south and is approximately 200 feet long. The former bridge has been demolished, but the old track bed is visible on the east side of the new bridge.
The coordinates are for a dirt pull-over where the bridge can be viewed. To reach from Interstate 40 on the southeast side of Durham, take Exit 281 (Miami Blvd) and proceed south to the intersection with Page Road/NC-54. Turn right onto NC-54 West. The bridge will be 0.1 mile. The pull-over will be on the left, after going under the bridge.
Bridge Type: Rigid Frame (Concrete Deck and Supports)
