Total Built - 32,540 from 1932 to 1940. 1935 Prices: $975 steel wheels, $1135 pneumatic wheels. Options: Electric lights $105, 150pound wheel weights $8.50 each, PTO shaft $14. Beginning in 1932 Harvester offered the McCormick-Derring W-30 as a standard tread version of the Farmall F-30 tractor. This 4-cylinder model was somewhat higher in horsepower than old reliable 10-20 McCormick-Deering -- it's rated 19 drawbar and 31 brake horsepower. This made it a close match to the 15-30. The F-30 row crop used 4-speed transmission while the W-30 featured 3 forward speeds, 2.5, 3.25, 3.75 mph. Later models had 4 speeds. The W-30 was especially popular in orchards and vineyards. With a total width of 66" the W-30 could easily squeeze through narrow rows, and an overall height of 120" further enhanced value in tight places. "Thirty-four ball and roller bearings are used throughout this tractor." This was quoted from an IH catalog as on of the many features of the W-30. Its rigid one-piece frame is similar to that used on the 10-20 and 15-30 models. Chrome-nickel steel and other alloys where used where necessary, and electric heat treating was also employed. Farmers of all areas of the coutry used W-30s. Extensive export sales boosted product figures still further. 6,541 units where sold during 1935. With the addition of the PTO, the W-30 became ideal for operating various of farm equipment. In the 1930s many farm machines still used auxiliary engines rather than using power from the tractors. This was partially due to inadequate tractor horsepower, with imperfect drive trains another limiting factor. The W-30 was an ideal threshing tractor. With rubber tires, moving from one field to another was a breeze compared to steel. Welding shops did a thriving business in cutting off steel rims and replacing them with rubber. W-30s were also used in commercial operations. The production of W-30s dropped to 2,557 units during 1939 and production ended in 1940 after only 547 tractors had been built.
