A limestone prairie is defined as where limestone lies just under or at the surface of the soil. This prevents many of the deep-rooting plants from growing. Many of the plants have roots growing in the limestone cracks. In the spring there are several blooming plants that are in their glory. Later in the season, other species will bloom. There will be a continuous display of colors here throughout the growing season.

The first flowers to bloom are at their peak in May:
Shooting-Star (Dodecatheon meadia) is a member of the Primrose Family.
Birdfoot Violet (Viola pedata) is a member of the Violet Family.
Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium augustifolium) is a member of the Iris Family. These are very light blue but some species are white.
Columbine (Aquilegia Canadensis) is a member of the Buttercup Family.
Wood-Betony (Pedicularis Canadensis) is a member of the Snapdragon Family.
Stargrass (Hypoxia hirsula) is a member of the Daffodil Family.
Hoary Puccoon (Lithospermum canescens) and Narrow-Leaved Puccoon (Lithospermum incisum) is a member of the Forget-me-not Family.
A photo of each of the above flowers are in this waymarks Photo Gallery.
