The fort was built in response to the Pyramid Lake Indian War of 1860, to provide protection to settlers along the Carson River, as well as the Overland Stage Route and Pony Express, and later, the Transcontinental Telegraph. It was named in honor of Sylvester Churchill, the Inspector General of the U.S. Army. It was built as a permanent istallation. Adobe buildings were erected on stone foundations in the form of a square, facing a central parade ground. Average strength of the post was 200 men.
The fort was occupied for 9 years, being abandoned in 1869. The adobe buildings were sold at auction for $750.00 to Samuel Buckland, a local rancher. He salvaged building materials from the fort and used them to build a two-story house along the Carson River, one mile east of the fort.
The fort became a part of the Nevada State Park system in 1957. On February 16, 1961, the title of Fort Churchill was reconveyed to the State of Nevada, that it might be official proclamation to be designated a state historic monument. The National Park Service made restoration plans, and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) renovated what was left of the once proud fort. It was the CCC who built the Visitor Center. The surviving buildings of the fort are maintained in a state of "arrested decay".
The State Park features camping, group camping, picnicking, a visitor center, trails, nature study & equesttrian activities. A $4.00 day use fee is charged to enter the park.
